Brian Walker’s Chicago Marathon

October 9, 2011

Attorney Brian Walker runs in marathon

Brian's journey came full circle on October 9 when he crossed the finish line of the Chicago Marathon.

It was an odyssey that began in 2005 when Brian went to Chicago to watch his brother-in-law, Chris, participate in the Chicago Marathon. Brian, his wife and some friends traveled to Chicago to enjoy a weekend in Chi Town and watch Chris run the race. Standing on the sidewalk on race day, something about the chill in the air and the enthusiasm of the crowd struck a chord in Brian. It was then he decided one day he wanted to run a marathon.

Reality Check #1: Brian was 46 years old and had never even run around the block! Not one to let a few “minor” obstacles get in his way, Brian found a training program online and began his quest. He began gradually, first running a 5k race, then a 10k race, eventually running 4 half marathons. His goal was in sight.

Reality Check #2: Brian couldn't have known that the very summer he was preparing for the marathon was one of the hottest summers in Texas history. (Ask him sometime what it felt like to run 20 miles in 100-plus degrees.)

And he did it! Standing among thousands of runners at the starting line, it was all as he remembered it—the excitement of the runners, the excitement of the crowd, but this time he wasn't an onlooker—he was a participant! He ran the race and crossed the finish line. How sweet was the completion of the journey.

Congratulations, Brian!
